GD BRUNY'S
BUSHRANGER ORIGINS:
A 2-PART STORYBOOK DRAMA
MINI SERIES.
After America’s War of Independence, in 1776, the English Government was told they could no longer dump their convicts on American soil. The Great South Land was substituted.
In 1805, fifty-five years before Ned Kelly was born, hundreds of transported and enslaved convicts fled from their assigned masters on the island-gaol, Van Diemen’s Land [later Tasmania].
They adapted to the wilderness; wandering wherever they chose. The term “Bush Rangers” was coined, in Hobart Town, by the settlement's Anglican Minister. The first and mightiest bush-ranging epoch began.
In 1810, John Whitehead formed the first bush-ranging gang: comprising one hundred escaped convict men.
By 1825, hundreds of fearsome, marauding, often cannibalistic bush-ranging gangs roamed the island-gaol; virtually unhindered, for more than 40 years.
A few were illustrious. Many were gallant. Apart from the notoriety, which rivaled America’s Wild West bad men, Bushranger swashbuckling ways were forced on them; driven by an elemental need to be free.
From late in 1850, hundreds of Vandemonian Bushrangers migrated to the new, non-convict Colony of goldrush Victoria, on the continent of Australia, where they continued to seek retribution for the treatment meted out to them by their suppressive, one-time gaolers.
Bushrangers and bush-ranging emerged out of a shameful, man’s-inhumanity-to-man transportation experiment; conceived of by a bigoted, 19th century, English aristocracy.
Discover a historically-rich and colorful subject matter in Bushranger Origins: a larger-than-life cavalcade of historical characters and events, re-tracing the steps of a sub-culture which endured for almost 100 years before vanishing, eternally, into virtual obscurity.
